I had the opportunity to 'roast'
Gloria Estefan at a surprise birthday party that her friends threw for her.
Her friends rented one of the large party boats that normally take Miami
tourists on a three-hour cruise and tour of celebrity homes.
Gloria's home is on Biscayne Bay, and one of the homes typically
pointed out on the tour. While she
is always gracious when one of the boats sails by her backyard, she has never
liked the intrusion on her family's privacy.
Knowing this, her friends arranged to
have her out in the backyard as the boat sailed by.
They asked me to pretend to be the tour guide on the boat's very-loud
PA system. "Look, there's
Gloria now! Hey, folks, what do you
say we go pay her a visit? I'm
sure she wouldn't mind." Of
course, Gloria could hear this and couldn't believe that one of the party
boats was actually making its way to her dock!
She continued to smile and wave, with this panicked look on her face,
until she realized that all the guests on the boat were people she knew.
She
and her husband Emilio joined us on board and we continued with the party.
In a little while I began my show, which consisted of customized material
all about Gloria and parodies of some of her songs.
When I finished the show, Gloria joined me at the microphone, thanked all
her friends, and then said that she also
had written song parodies to some of her songs, which she performed for all
of us! (Good taste and fear
of lawsuits prevent me from sharing the words with you here!) |
