When I
lived in Los Angeles for a short time, I was invited to a casting call for
comedians for a CBS television show that was being produced by comedy legend
Steve Martin. I found myself in a
room with about 200 comedians, of which they were looking to cast five.
We each were given two minutes to stand in front of Steve Martin and a
few other folks and "audition". At
the end of two minutes, your microphone would go dead.
Because many of my song parodies are very short, I was able to do a lot
of material in two minutes.
I received a call the next day that I had been
chosen by Steve Martin and his "people" as one of the five!
The next week I was on the set at Universal Studios, shooting a very
short scene for a summer series called George
Burns Comedy Week. Steve was on
the set for a while, overseeing the production, and it was a real joy to work
with him. (An interesting sidenote: The main comic in that week's episode was
a fairly unknown newcomer named Paul Reiser.)
