The
legendary comedian never had a Bar Mitzvah, which is traditional for Jewish boys
at age 13. He had been scheduled to
have one as a boy, but family emergencies caused the event to be cancelled.
Fast forward sixty years: Henny Youngman is now
in his seventies. Merv Griffin's
Resorts Casino in Atlantic City offered to host a Bar Mitzvah for him, using the
theory of "better late than never." My
cousin, Atlantic City writer David Spatz, was the organizer of the event, so I
was able to get one of the limited invitations.
It was a wonderful and moving event to see Henny go through the ceremony.
He was very funny, but also visibly moved at the magnitude of the event.
As a fellow comedian, I felt honored to be a part of this very special
occasion,
